Amending Your Garden Soil

Fall is an amazing time to incorporate organic matters into your soil to improve aeration, drainage and add essential nutrients for plants.
If slow release nutrients are incorporated now, they will be there to benefit plants first thing in spring. In perennial beds, plants can be cut back after a hard frost to make it easier to till amendment in around plants. Remember not to dig or rototill the soil when it is very wet as it will damage the structure of soil.
Here are some great fall soil amendments for drainage and aeration:
Sea Soil
This compost is derived from fish fines and bark and is a fantastic source of nutrients. Great for veggie gardens
Soil Booster
Soil Booster combines several natural sources of organic matter and nutrients. We love this mix for amending soil AND fall planting or transplanting.
Second Nature Compost
For large areas Second Nature Compost is available in bulk from Greenland. This rich compost is made by the City of Edmonton - it will revitalize tired or heavy soils.
Here are some fall soil amendments for nutrients:
Kelp
This natural fertilizer is one of the best sources of nutrients; it actually contains many micronutrients that other fertilizers don’t.
Bone Meal
This popular granular fertilizer is a great source of phosphorous for plants. Excellent for vegetable gardens, and for fall planting/transplanting. |
