Insects on Plants

Spider Mites
Safers & Doktor Doom

This week in the garden has been a challenging one for many annuals, shrubs and evergreens. From a distance, you may think that you do not have an infestation, but take a very close look at stems of plants to be sure. Here are some to watch for:

Aphids

They come in so many colors and sizes, that many times gardeners do not even know they have them. Watch for any curling of leaves, mottled growth or unusual colors of leaves. Aphids are often found on the stems of plants or under leaves, so look carefully. They are soft bodied, so start by hosing the plant down to get rid of many of the insects. Once dry, products such as Safers End All, Doktor Doom House and Garden or Ambush will control the infestation.

Spider Mite

Many evergreens such as upright junipers are experiencing infestations of mites. They cause discoloration and can kill plants if not controlled. Look along stems of your evergreens for mites or shake branches over a white piece of paper to see if any insects are crawling on it. Spider mites are very small and when squished will often leave a red residue. To control, use Malathion, Doktor Doom House and Garden .
