Pond Algae

Indoor Water Garden

Ponds can be relatively maintenance free, but when it comes to algae, it can be frustrating to maintain. Algae makes water look murky but can be controlled with filters and pond water products.

Filters

Filters are essential to keeping your pond water clear. Without a filter, impurities can accumulate and create a toxic and cloudy environment. With mechanical filters, dirty water flows through the filter, dirt and debris become trapped. The water then returns to the pond free of debris. If you choose a biological filter, the filter provides an area where beneficial bacteria can grow and multiply - these bacteria work to break down harmful toxins such as ammonia from fish waste and respiration.

There are various filters available; some are installed above ground, some directly in the pond - to choose one that's right for your water feature, visit the staff in our watergarden area.

Water Treatment Products

Though water treatment products are very user-friendly, and quite effective, you should always remember that some of them are only short term, sort of a Band Aid for a greater problem. If you are following general pond maintenance, chances are you won’t have a use for the treatment products. But sometimes there is a need – whether you have a new pond and haven’t implemented a filter system, or haven’t purchased plants yet.

Below are some of the treatment products by Laguna and Aquascape that are available:

Water Prep or Pond Detox – Should be used when first filling a pond, or when replacing a large amount of water. A water de-chlorinator, essential if there are fish in the pond.

Beneficial Bacteria or Bio Booster – 100% natural water clarifier that contains beneficial bacteria that consume ammonia and nitrates. Quite cost effective, treats a large amount of water.

Bio Sludge Control – A preventative. Breaks down organic wastes and pond sludge. Important when there are fish in the pond. Contains microorganisms.

Phosphate Control – Contains microorganisms that compete with algae. Will not danger plants or fish. Use at the first sight of green water.

Clear Fast or Rapid Clear – a fast acting formula that removes algae and particles from pond water by causing clumping. The larger clumps can then get caught in the filtration system or will become heavy enough to sink to the bottom of the pond..

Pond Clean or Ion Generator – Copper ions affect the growth of algae. This is either a liquid or and electronic system to introduce copper to the pond to limit or kill of algae growth.

Barley Straw Pellets - Although Barley Straw Pellets can take up to 2 or 3 weeks to become effective, there is still enough time in the season to be adding them to your pond. But it's important to note Barley Straw Pellets are best used in the spring and early summer, as they are an inexpensive and effective choice when taking preventative measures against pond algae.
