The warm days of summer (when they arrive!) are a wonderful time for lawns. Lawns can grow quite quickly, needing frequent mowing, but can also suffer from hot, dry spells. Here are some great tips for keeping your lawn its healthiest this summer. |

Watering
- Water your lawn deeply once per week, as opposed to frequent light sprinklings. Established lawns will require 2.5cm (1”) of water per week. IF we receive sufficient rainfall each week, you should not need to water the lawn
- Water early in the morning, and on calm days to prevent evaporation.
- To test how long it takes for your sprinkler to deposit 1”, place an empty tuna can in the path of the sprinkler; time how long it takes for the can to fill. This will be the approximate amount of time you should be watering each week.

Mowing
- Do not mow your lawn too short; the average height of the lawn should be maintained at 6-8cm (2.5-3”). The longer blades provide shade for the turf’s root system.
- Use a mulching mower, and leave grass clippings on the lawn to return nitrogen to the lawn and reduce moisture loss. This will also help reduce waste AND eliminate carrying all those bags of clippings to the curb. Note you will need to mow 2-3 times weekly when the lawn is growing rapidly.

Fertilizing
- Your lawn will require a significant source of nitrogen to continue to produce healthy blades. Nitrogen is represented by the first number on your fertilizer bag; choose something such as Golf Green 20-0-5 or the organic Turf Revolution Green Revival 8-1-6.
