Seasonal Plants

Cyclamen

Cyclamens are known for their unusual flowers with strongly reflexed petals.  Flowers come in a wide range of colours except blue.  Plants prefer bright but not direct light (an east or west window will do fine).  Keep

them evenly moist (allow the top one inch to dry out between waterings). Will enjoy spending summer outdoors, but choose a shady spot.  Indoors, they are sensitive to hot and cold; keep away from registers as well as away from doorways that may experience cold breezes.

Kalanchoe

These succulent flowering plants have long lasting clusters of flowers in shades of red, pink, peach and orange.  Keep them in bright light and water sparingly (allow almost all of the potting mix to dry out between

waterings).  Do not allow any water to remain standing in the sleeve or saucer.  They flower up to 6 weeks, then will require a period of darkness (14 hours per day) in order to set flower buds again.

Pot Mums

Keep evenly moist and in bright, but not direct sunlight.  Note that most often the Pot Mums sold for indoor colour are not sufficiently hardy enough to be overwintered outdoors.  To encourage new growth and blooms, pinch back plants after blooming.

Hibiscus

Truly tropical plants with huge trumpet blossoms in a wide range of colours.  Hibiscus flower best in full sunlight.  Keep evenly moist and do not allow to dry out.  Prune back hard to promote and maintain bushiness. May be pruned into a tree, filtered bright light outdoors in summer.  Common pest may include whitefly, so keep a close eye out.
